About dental crowns
Dental crowns are a form of restorative treatment used to strengthen and protect decayed or damaged teeth. You may need a crown if you’ve been involved in an accident or you’re suffering from a severe dental infection. In this case, a crown is usually fitted following root canal treatment. Crowns are custom-made to ensure that they fit over the affected tooth perfectly. They can be made from various materials, including ceramics and precious metals. Many people choose to have ceramic crowns, as they blend in with your natural teeth.
If you need a new crown, there are two options. The traditional method involves creating a mould and then sending it off to a dental laboratory. Around two weeks later, your bespoke crown will be fitted. The other option, which we are proud to be able to offer our London patients, is CEREC same-day treatment. CEREC is an innovative form of technology that enables us to design, fabricate and place a new crown all on the same day on-site. Your dentist will discuss the options with you and help you decide which course of action suits you best.
How long will my crown last?
Typically, crowns should last between 5 and 15 years. Once your crown has been fitted, it’s essential to look after it in the same way as you would a healthy natural tooth. Brush your teeth twice a day every day, and keep up to date with dental checks.
