What are amalgam fillings?

In the past, mercury amalgam fillings were used widely in dentistry. If you had a cavity in your tooth, it was standard procedure to fill it using a mixture of materials including mercury. Over the years, technology has advanced and new materials have become available. Today, we prefer to use safer, more effective, more aesthetically pleasing alternatives. Amalgam fillings are highly visible, as they are silver in colour, but there are also concerns about the safety of using mercury in fillings and the impact on the environment. To provide the best possible results, we recommend white fillings for our patients.

What’s so good about white fillings?

White fillings are a very popular alternative to amalgam fillings. The most noticeable difference is the look of the filling. As you can probably guess from the name, white fillings are designed to blend in seamlessly with the natural tooth structure. This means that once the filling is in place, you won’t be able to see it when you smile. White fillings are made from dental composite, resins and glass ionmers, which are much less controversial than mercury. White fillings used to be suitable only for the front teeth due to a lack of strength, but advances in the development of materials have ensured that most patients can now benefit from composite fillings.
