Lost a Tooth When out and About? How 24hr Emergency Dentist can help

Sometimes, accidents happen when you least expect them and that’s why we’re always ready to leap into action if you need urgent dental help. If you’ve lost a tooth while you’re out and about, we can help. Here is some useful information to help ease anxiety and get you smiling again if you do lose a tooth unexpectedly.

What to do if you lose a tooth

The first thing to do if you lose a tooth is locate the tooth. If you’re able to get help quickly enough, it may be possible to save a tooth that has been knocked out (this is also known as an avulsed tooth). Give us a call and let us know that you’ll be dropping in to see us and we’ll do our best to fix you up as quickly as possible.

If you are able to find the tooth, clean it very gently and make sure you hold it only by the crown section, rather than the roots. Once the tooth is cleaned, you can attempt to re-implant the tooth into its socket. If you can’t do it, or you don’t feel comfortable trying, you can leave this job to us. In the meantime, while you’re on your way, store the tooth in a glass of milk or tepid water. If you can get to us fast enough, our dentists will try their best to put the tooth safely back into the socket.

If it’s not possible to save the tooth, don’t panic. We have some excellent tooth replacement treatments we can use to restore your smile, including dental bridges and dental implants. Our dentists will go through the treatment options with you so that you’re able to make a well-informed decision.

Preventing dental injuries

Sometimes, it’s impossible to avoid injury, but there are measures you can take to reduce your risk of accidents, such as:

  • Wearing a protective mouth guard for sports like boxing, hockey, rugby and lacrosse
  • Wearing a seat belt
  • Avoiding using your teeth to try and cut labels off or open bottles
