How to Look after Weakened Teeth

Our teeth are made of sturdy stuff, but they can become weak as a result of injury, infection, decay or trauma. If you have a weak tooth, there is a higher risk of further damage or infection and you may be advised to have a crown.

Dental crowns are a type of restoration used to make the teeth stronger and more robust. They are sometimes known as caps because they fit over the top of the tooth.

Why would I need a crown?

You may be advised to have a crown if:

  • Your tooth is decayed
  • You have fracture or chipped a tooth and it has become weak
  • You have had dental implant treatment or root canal therapy
  • Your tooth has been damaged as a result of an injury or accident

Crowns are a way of reducing the risk of further damage to the teeth and they can also have benefits for the look of your smile.

What are crowns made from?

There are various different options when it comes to choosing a material for your crown. Metal crowns are very strong, but they are visible when you smile, while ceramic crowns are much more aesthetically pleasing. One very popular option is a crown made from ceramic (usually porcelain) fused to metal, which offers both strength and beauty.

How is a crown fitted?

Treatment involves two key stages. During the first appointment, the tooth is cleaned and prepared. This involves removing all the decayed tissue and then creating an impression of the tooth, which is sent away to the laboratory. In the meantime, while the permanent crown is being fabricated by technicians, a temporary crown is fitted. During second appointment, which is usually two weeks later, the crown is fitted and secured into place using strong dental adhesive.

The procedure shouldn’t be painful, as the first stage is carried out under local anaesthetic.

How long will a crown last?

Crowns should last for several years, but it is important that you care for the tooth in the normal way. Although it is impossible for the actual crown to become decayed, the area that joins the crown to the natural tooth can become decayed.
