The wisdom teeth have something of a bad reputation and this is because they can be very painful when they appear. For many people, the wisdom teeth erupt and develop without any issues, but sometimes, they can cause discomfort. This is usually due to the fact that there is a lack of space available in the jaw for the new teeth. If you are suffering from pain, here are three things you can do to reduce wisdom tooth discomfort.
- Take over the counter painkillers: if you have dental pain, over the counter painkillers can help to alleviate symptoms and make you feel better. Make sure you read the labels and stick to the recommended dosage. If you’re unsure what to take, we can help or you can ask a pharmacist for advice. Take care if you’re already taking medication for an underlying illness; in this case, seek advice from your pharmacist.
- Apply an ice pack: when your wisdom teeth are coming through, this can cause your gums to become painful and swollen. If you’ve got sore gums, applying an ice pack can help to reduce inflammation and ease pain. Make sure the ice pack is wrapped in a cloth or towel to prevent direct contact with the skin.
- See your dentist: wisdom tooth pain can come and go very quickly without any need for treatment, but if you have persistent pain or your pain is very severe, call and make an appointment. Sometimes, the teeth can become infected or impacted (when they push against the neighbouring tooth) and in this case, it is often best to remove them to prevent any further problems.

Have you lost a tooth in an accident or whilst playing sport? If you lose a tooth, don’t panic! It may be possible to save the tooth if you act quickly.
What to do if you lose a tooth
If you’ve had a tooth knocked out, try and locate the tooth as quickly as possible. If the tooth is still intact, holding it by the crown, gently clean it and wipe off any dirt or dust. If you’re not squeamish, you can try and reinsert the tooth into the socket. Do this by very gently easing the tooth into the hole from which it came. If you can’t bear to do this, give us a call and we will see you as soon as possible, In the meantime, avoid touching the tooth roots and keep the tooth in a glass of lukewarm water or milk. If you haven’t got access to a glass or any liquid, hold the tooth very carefully between your gum and the inner cheek (this will keep the tooth moist). Note that this advice is for adults only.
When you see your dentist, they will try and re-implant the tooth back into the socket. If this isn’t viable and it’s not possible to salvage the tooth, there’s no need to worry. We have some excellent tooth replacement treatments available, including dental bridges, dentures and dental implants.
Preventing dental injuries
In dentistry, prevention is always better than cure. Some accidents are inevitable, but there are often steps you can take to try and reduce the risk. These include wearing a mouth guard when you play sport, wearing a seatbelt in the car and avoiding using your teeth to cut labels or remove bottle tops. It’s also wise to avoid fighting at all costs.
