Preventing denture damage

Sometimes, it’s impossible to prevent accidents, but if you do have a denture, it’s really beneficial to try and look after it as best as you can. When you’re not wearing your denture, keep it somewhere safe and always clean your denture over a bowl of water or a soft cloth or towel. This will help to prevent damage if the denture does slip out of your hands.

We recommend attending regular dental appointments to make sure that your denture works effectively and prevent sore spots and irritation. Your mouth changes shape on a continual basis and this means that the denture may not fit as well as it did to begin with after a period of time. If you’re looking for inspiration for New Year’s resolutions, why not make your health a priority and pay more attention to safeguarding your smile? Here are 4 things you can do to protect your teeth in 2018:

  1. Improve your oral hygiene regime: if you don’t already brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time, now is the time to make some changes. Brushing is so important because it removes bacteria and food debris from the mouth before it forms plaque. Set a timer or buy a brush with an inbuilt timer to make sure you brush thoroughly.
  2. Use fluoride toothpaste: fluoride is a mineral, which can help to reduce the risk of dental decay by strengthening the enamel surface. Using fluoride toothpaste could help to make your teeth stronger and more resistant to cavities.
  3. See your dentist every 6-9 months: it’s so important to keep up to date with dental checks. Seeing your dentist on a regular basis can reduce the risk of gum disease and decay by up to 60 percent. If you can’t remember the last time you had a check-up, make 2018 the year you see your dentist more.
  4. Stop snacking: you may think that the only problem related to grazing throughout the day is weight gain, but snacking can also be incredibly harmful for your teeth. When you eat, your enamel weakens temporarily. If you’re eating all the time, this means that your teeth are under constant attack. It’s particularly beneficial to avoid sugary and acidic foods and drinks, which increase the risk of enamel erosion.
